DIALOGUE |

The New Ukrainian Education |
The theme of our dialog is the new Ukrainian education in the broad sense of the word. At some time in the past the education was intended to promote knowledge; now educators want to “show=instruct=give a chance” to use this knowledge. Only a century ago the greater part of population could not read. Now there is another problem: the new generation knows three Rs but don’t need it. Therefore the new Ukrainian education answers the question “How?”: how to apply knowledge. Thus, education is the system of forming in the society of confidence in the necessity of transformations in economic, political, military, legal, cultural, spiritual spheres. It is the mechanism of transformation of knowledge into the motivation to action and choice of optimum way to realization of tasks. Therefore the education is intended not so much to popularize knowledge, as to open new vista, form worthy aims and specify new, alternative ways to achieve them. Education spreads alternative ideas, including self-affirmation of the state and its new mission in the changing world. The Pushkin’s formula "Freedom is an inevitable result of education" today is topical for Ukraine as never before. The history of education is connected to Revival, escape from dogmas and formulation of new tasks, this is the time of "appropriation" of freedom, restoration of human right for freedom. Another aspect of education consists in formation of the transmitters of the new idea, new unity. Students have new leading lights now. Klychko brothers, Andriy Shevchenko, Ruslana Lyzhychko are new national symbols; however, they are only pioneers which managed to win universal acclaim for their talent and professionalism; they represent the new model of victorious strategy, complete success. Unlike the majority of national heroes-martyrs which lived to demonstrate their ability to bravely survive defeats, these new heroes show, how to win. It concerns only a few individuals at the start, but with modern communications these unique examples inspire hundreds and thousands of people. Though, one wouldn’t like to find oneself in a country praising only sportspersons and artists as idols. Who can guide education of a new epoch? Who can become a customer of education? First comes a middle class represented by the young ambitious business, which has been formed during the revival and made it to the top in those alternative niches which were not blocked by transitional pseudo-elites. From the very start the transmitters of new ideas of education should compete on the domestic and external markets of political, economic, cultural, and spiritual leaders. The new Ukrainian education is intended to form the bank of breakthrough ideas and mechanisms of their realization. Educators, unlike leaders, do not impose their rules upon society. They know the alternative and carry thousands of followers spiritually and conscientiously ready for the new choice. They win for this very reason.

“Authors making our books, do it with love”
Ivan Malkovych, Director of A-BA-BA-GA-LA-MA-GA Publishers If you put your whole love, time, and soul into a book, you will get it everything back in return.

Fragile vital activity
Les Herasymchuk, culturologist We need no terms to create—we need to take away those structures, which control and hamper the development of those talented persons, which, indisputably, are with us. Especially among the young people. We need to alleviate the tax yoke and bureaucratic limitations; like an old idealistic slogan "Land to peasants", we need to realize slogans "printing-houses to writers, galleries to artists."

|
Our mission is to show that it is workable
Yuri Alekseev, Rector of Kyiv Slavic University studies Commercial institutes of higher education are uncompetitive now; they are only an appendage to the public system of education. There must be one system of education in the state. There is no need to split it into the state and non-state one. All educational establishments should work in one legal field.
|
|
|
Time of ratio
Ivan Andrusiak, poet The world literary process is a fiction, it does not exist. Instead every normal state propagates its writers—both classics and contemporaries—abroad, sponsors their translation out of the country as a part of national image making to be used abroad.

“We cultivate Russian culture, American, French, just name it…, except for our own"
Oleg Skrypka, rock musician, leader of VV group The very fact I am speaking about it will make someone to think about another sort of music, besides that one they play back on television. Sure, I have no private TV channel and do not play back the right sort of music, which would captivate the audience that is music not for earning millions, but for some higher purpose.

„Our culture could make more progress"
Yevhen Stankovych, composer In any society and at all times there will be a group of people feel the divine calling and going in for arts even then, when nobody will need it anymore.

Higher education: step forward, step backward, but there are nuances
Vyacheslav Briukhovetsky, President of the National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy The state stands, as a policeman, near a higher education. And it does not punish the low level at that, and that is the problem. Certainly, there must be a supervisory organ, but it should control the quality of education, and not the methods and ways of education.

Education today is an accompaniment of the access to knowledge
Volodymyr Nikitin, Doctor of Culturology, Assistant Director for Development at the International Center for Prospective Studies Present education is built on the idea of individual trajectories. The well-educated person is not the knower, but a person capable of finding his/her bearings and understanding, what knowledge or abilities s/he lacks and what the next step should be.

Remote hum
Inna Cherednychenko, Editor-in-Chief of the Big Game Magazine Estimating the efficiency of government humanitarian programs, one feels ill at ease speaking about "substantial changes". At least, at the national scale. Yes, there are single projects, some of them are worth mentioning, but they are difficult to be brought out in the context of programs we are speaking about.

“The educational television can not replace the book reading”
Yuri Makarov, anchorman of the “Studio 1+1” channel The more Messianic fire I see in the eyes of a rescuer of culture, the more I call his education into question

Our television forms a “devil-may-care attitude” and consumer
Natalia Lygacheva, Head of Board of Directors, Chief-Editor of Editions of the public organization Telekrytyka Day by day the gap between the life on the screen, and in reality grows bigger. The TV does not reflect realities of our society and does not satisfy needs of our citizens. I mean interests an inch above the waist. Those are interests in the field of education, culture, policy. The TV has no feed-back from the audience.

“I suggest to declare a moratorium on the criticism of our mentality”
Larysa Ivshyna, Editor-in-Chief of the Day Daily History of Ukrainian people gives rich material for Ukrainian future, because it permits Ukrainians to stand up straight. If you’re well-read in our history, there is no need to moan about our inferiority. Knowing history, Ukrainians may easily bring back the lost dignity.

My cinema teaches people to live
Yuri Rohoza, script writer, writer The market of movie theaters in Ukraine is one of the most dynamic. Certainly, they live now mainly at the expense of Americans. But sociological researches show that 90% of people wait for the domestic product.

There is money in the country; they should be put to proper use
Inna Bogoslovska, President of the Prudens Consulting Firm Certainly, I am a supporter of the theory of education. Therefore we consider it a priority. Undoubtedly, when we earn our money. Nobody abolished money, and I think nobody’ll do it in the nearest century.

“Not all public organizations now have grants”
Vasylyna Dybailo, Director of the Hurt Resource Center A man can not think about other thinks, if he has not enough money. You can be a public worker, if you have money to live on. Therefore the growing public activity shows that the standard of living is upping which makes it possible for our citizens to think about other things.

|
The work in public social establishments is too formalized
Taras Bryzhovatyi, Director of the “Social Service Bethany Fund We pay great attention to raising the level of knowledge and skills of social workers. We have been implementing this program for public and non-public organizations for the third year now, as far as social servants are below the needed level of qualification.

Sociopolis is a city of future
Volodymyr Shevchenko, Executive Director of the International Public Organization "Sociopolis in Ukraine" Now in Europe they tend to create regional structures not on bureaucratically-administrative, but on a situational network basis. And it is interesting that we pioneered this idea in Ukraine.

Tactical games
Volodymyr Fesenko, Political Scientist The elite has split up into political camps and formulated programs. However, it is nothing but tactical games. And neither political forces, nor the country as a whole have a strategy of development.

Science of semi-processed goods
Victor Syzontov, Editor-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Industrial Magazine Dengi I Tekhnologii, Corresponding Member of Ukrainian Technological Academy High technologies are intended for the future. Industrial automation helps to tackle current necessities of production. Technological breakthroughs occur then and there when and where specialists prognosticate the future needs. The breakthroughs are possible in fundamental science as well, but there is a shortage of resources.

|
Science is not a branch, but a national booster
Boris Malytsky, Doctor of Economy, Director of H. Dobrov Center for the studies of technological potential and history of science of the NASU The sanatorium-and-spa treatment of deputies and officials is financed better, than the National Academy of Sciences, and fundamental researches are budgeted below the two leading soccer clubs. The state protects the exporters of raw material, against which anti-dumping investigations are conducted in America, instead of punishing them for neglect of innovative policy.

Dominant of consumerism
Les Taniuk, People’s Deputy, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee for Culture and Spirituality. People, which think that "first comes bread and morals go second" hamper the renewal of Ukrainian state. Denigrating spirituality, we get economic problems. We will not be able to build the technological civilization, if we do not budget education, culture, intellectual centers, youth development; we will trail along at the back.

|
We need not cramming, but heuristic
Krymskyi Serhiy, philosopher They do not understand what education is. They think it is propaganda of scientific knowledge. But in such sense any lecturer is an educator. However the Age of Enlightenment pursued other objects. There existed a system of knowledge, which could be understood by everybody.

“Theater is a place, where people look for truth”
Volodyslav Troitskyi, Founder of the Modern Art Center DAKH, actor, producer A theatrical utterance can return a man to understanding that he is a human, and not a faceless, irresponsible creature walking on Khreshchatyk St., gorging beer and getting a dang over the box. The quality theater should form society and manage it.
