DIALOGUE

Hailing the Post-Soviet Generation (snapshots of young people’s life)

Suggesting the new topic for a discussion, the Dialog.UA left aside the criteria of age: should a young person below 24 or 28 years of age, or, according to the new legislation, below 35? Instead, we made a try to understand the quality changes in the world view, values and preferences of the young generation—the post-soviet generation.
Expert opinions
“The young people became more individualistic, more independent, more cynical, but also more active”
Taras Loginov, Head of the Board of Youth Public Organization Club “Compass”
Sometimes, in everyday life the young people of different classes have nothing to do with one another, as they go to different institutions of higher learning, use different transport, frequent to different clubs and go shopping to different shops. Nevertheless, in the case of serious threats the young people are ready to unite and rise to the task.

Our convictions are constant
Valentyna Dymytrova, member of Plast of NSOU, Eastern region, Donetsk District
The young activists of Plast serve as an example and try to prove the necessity of studying, knowing, and fulfilling Ukrainian history, traditions and customs, the leading role of Ukrainian language in our state. We promote healthy way of life as one of the most important aspects of education of Ukrainian young people—future creators and leaders of our society.

“The volunteer movement is a result of desire of self-realization”
Tetiana Danyliv, Director of the Center of Volunteer Movement “Dobra Volia”
Some seniors are skeptic about the volunteer movement, because in the past the declared working for free wasn’t done voluntarily (e.g. subbotniks). While volunteers perform their acts without being legally bound to do so and without expecting to be paid.

“Day by day the amount of politically active young women is increasing”
Natalia Tochylenkova, assistant to the programs of the public organization Zhinochy Konsortsium Ukrayiny
There is a traceable trend: the percent of young female activists is much lower, than that of male activists. The main cause is stereotypes present in their training, which exert pressure determining the sexist behavior. This model treats politics as a male business.

The young generation will not show its best soon without some sort of organization
Mykhailo Chaplyha, President of the Ukrayinski Falkony.
I’d call this generation a generation of romantics and idealists still unbroken by the system. It grew up in different educational system. Unlike us, they feel internal freedom.

“I saw the real political activity of young people only in 2004”
Liudmyla Kudina, Chairman of public organization the Youth Alternative
I do not eliminate, that in connection with difficult economic situation the young people will go on taking part in different actions for money, but making their choice at the polling station, or tackling their personal problems the young people will be honest to themselves.

The new rules of game are impossible, before they are formed by people with new thinking; however, such people can not be formed prior to the emergence of the new system
Stanislav Shumliansky, Director of the Internet radio “Wave of Ukrainian music “The Young Radio”
This is the very time of crystallization of all political forces of the future Ukrainian policy. In two to three years there will appear new political projects, which will form a new political landscape, elite. Certainly, it will be viable, if there is no ban on the promotion of youth. If it is the case, they will resort to underground.

The program of the future acceptable for our youth is still to be written
Rostyslav Semkiv, Director of the Smoloskyp Publishers, literary critic
“The young people aren’t the age group to formulate program on their own. But I am sure that they already have stable views of their own; there are reference points they are unlikely to discard: the feeling of freedom, understanding of what is cultural, and what is not.

The all-Ukrainian publications do not pay sufficient attention to youth organizations
Oxana Andrusiak, Vice-president of the European Youth Parliament
The values we are spreading in Ukraine include the pro-European orientation of young people. We want to introduce them to the European dialog for them to socialize, exchange views, and gain experience with the representatives of various countries of Europe.

“Young person’s response to political changes, like a bare nerve, is sharper”
Oles Doniy, Chief Manager of the Center for studies of political values
At the turn of ‘80s and ‘90s the young persons were drawn to politics by faith and idea; now the main attractions are power and money.

The new political project is viable and in demand
Oleg Vernyk, Coordinator of the Left initiative
Ukraine is a poor country, and the bored poor youngsters are eager to participate in electioneering, boo at party meetings, mix and socialize for a song or just for a fun of it.

Youngsters are just expecting anew tumult
Andriy Yusov, Vice-Chairman of the panel of public party PORA
No political structure in Ukraine today has its effective self-ruled youth organization with a chance to influence anything. But if you want young persons to behave as subjects of policy, and not only of the youth policy, you’ rather break stereotypes, break the officials’ picture of the role of young persons in the modern society.

The current generation of young people is not inferior
Lidiya Tkachenko, leading researcher of the department of research of human development of the Institute of demography and social studies of the NASU
The young population will find their own way in a decade. It is difficult to tell, what way it will be; we’re in the same boat, though. My guess is they grow up and learn to be responsible. Eventually, this generation is like all other generations.

Young people require new public policy
Olga Balakireva, Head of the department of monitoring of socio-economic transformations, Candidate of Sociology, Ukrainian Society Journal, E-in-C
If the gap between the standard of living and opportunities of self-realization persists, there is no way to train them to be patriots. Only the change of relation of the state to the man as a value can be of any avail.

“This year the Ukrainian youth movement has made a serious step toward the integration into the European youth space”
Olexandr Yarema, Director of the department of youth policy of the Ministry of family, young people and sports
Many organizations declare patriotic education of young people. Another cluster of questions is the leadership, i.e. training of leaders. They are good, when they form a leader and patriot.

Parents and grandfathers have left young people vulnerable
Yevhen Gudz, vice-president of the Association of young Ukrainian political scientists and politicians
Our youth organizations admit ambitious young people aspiring to try their strength in public life. Besides, they want to earn money. Without such stimuli the young people do not participate, they are simply short of time.

If we had a majority vote, we would have had considerably more young persons in the radas
Olexandr Solontai, Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Youth Public Organization Fund of Regional Initiatives, deputy of the oblast rada
The proportional electoral system in the absence of parties as such and presence of corruption and trading in the places on the list banishes young people from fitting places in local administration. For form's sake, parties consent to admit maximum one or two young people.

The reduced price of labor is a key problem with youth employment
Liudmyla Shangina, Razumkov UCEPI
The situation is rather paradoxical: the level of patriotism of young people grows up, people love this country, but they refuse to cast in their lot with it. It is an evidence of the fact that the state has failed to create conditions for self-realization of young persons.

We prepare the best part of our young people for export
Olexandr Stehniy, Doctor of Sociology, leading researcher of the Institute of sociology of the NASU
There is a pattern: the higher is the level of education, the higher are the financial standards, the more young people intend to go abroad. Strange as it may seem, but we train the best specialists for export.
